UK Convenes AI Energy Council to Unite Tech Growth with Clean Power Goals

The UK government has held the inaugural meeting of its new AI Energy Council, a strategic initiative aimed at aligning the nation’s AI ambitions with its clean energy and economic growth objectives.

At the heart of the Council’s mission is a commitment to ensuring that the UK’s drive to become a clean energy superpower complements its investment in cutting-edge AI and computational infrastructure. The Council will establish its core objectives during the first meeting, focusing on how sustainable energy can support AI’s increasing demands.

Originally unveiled in the AI Opportunities Action Plan, the Council provides a platform for energy and tech experts to address the substantial energy requirements of AI systems, particularly large-scale data centres. These concerns are part of a wider global challenge, as AI development accelerates and strains national power grids.

Strategic AI Growth Zones

To meet this challenge head-on, the UK has launched AI Growth Zones—dedicated hubs located in areas with access to at least 500MW of power, enough to supply around two million homes. These zones aim to attract private investment, support new data centre infrastructure, generate local jobs, and stimulate economic activity.

Leadership and Vision

Peter Kyle, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, said:

“The work of the AI Energy Council will ensure we’re not only powering our AI ambitions to unlock opportunity across the UK, but doing so in a way that is responsible and sustainable.

This demands deep collaboration between industry and regulators to power up our economy and make it fit for the age of AI, driving the growth that lies at the heart of our Plan for Change.”

The Council is expected to explore how renewable and nuclear energy sources can sustainably support AI expansion, while also advising on improving the energy efficiency of AI infrastructure, including considerations like water usage in data centres.

Importantly, the Council will also examine how AI can be used within the energy sector itself, ensuring its secure and efficient integration across the UK’s critical infrastructure.

Energy Reform and Infrastructure Expansion

Parallel to the Council’s launch, the UK is working with Ofgem and the National Energy System Operator (NESO) to overhaul the country’s energy connections process. Pending final approval, these reforms could release over 400GW of capacity—a vital step in supporting new data centres and accelerating key energy projects.

This move supports the government’s Clean Power Action Plan, which aims to speed up grid access for clean energy and infrastructure projects across sectors like housing, manufacturing, and technology.

Key Members and Industry Backing

The Council includes representatives from 14 leading organisations across the energy and tech industries, such as EDF, Scottish Power, National Grid, Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services (AWS), ARM, and infrastructure investor Brookfield.

Their shared goal: to accelerate energy project connections to the grid, ensuring the UK is prepared to meet the surging demands of AI innovation.

Alison Kay, VP for UK and Ireland at AWS, commented:

“We’re committed to powering our operations sustainably and advancing toward net-zero carbon by 2040. As the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, we support the UK’s vision of providing clean energy access to fuel AI-driven growth.”

Jonathan Brearley, CEO of Ofgem, added:

“AI has the potential to transform our energy system, making it cleaner, smarter, and more cost-efficient for consumers. Working with the Council, we’ll ensure its use is safe, fair, and in the best interests of the public.”

With streamlined planning approvals and accelerated access to power, the UK government is laying the groundwork for AI innovation to thrive alongside environmental responsibility. The AI Energy Council will be pivotal in steering this growth—balancing the future of artificial intelligence with a sustainable, secure energy ecosystem.
