Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it Superman? The internet is curious about the mysterious villain whose silhouette pops up in the latest trailer of Jake Schreier’s Marvel movie Thunderbolts*. So far, Marvel has been mum about who the pack of oddballs, known as Thunderbolts, are uniting against in the movie. However, the new trailer offers a glimpse.
What’s in the trailer?
The trailer starts with a woman’s voice describing this mysterious villain, “Witness the invincible, stronger than all the Avengers rolled into one, and soon to be known as Earth’s mightiest hero. We then see a silhouetted figure flying high in the sky, looking over a city which he’s about to destroy. “Why would God take orders from anyone at all? Maybe I should show you what I’m capable of,” he says, before he begins to erode the city’s population. He doesn’t snap like Thanos, but just signals and turns people into an inky substance, into their shadows, as if sending them into the void.
Another character shows concern and says, “Sentry’s gone off the rails and he’s dangerous. The Avengers are gone. No one is coming to save the day,” before Sebastian Stan’s Bucky aka The Winter Soldier intervenes and says, “We could be the people that are coming.” He then assembles the Thunderbolts — him along with Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, and Olga Kurylenko’s Antonia Dreykov aka Taskmaster to join forces against Sentry. Sentry then reveals another name for himself, which may just ring a bell with Marvel comic nerds. “I am The Void. It’s no use fighting. You’re not Earth’s mightiest heroes.

First appearing in The Sentry #1 edition in 2000, The Void aka Dark Sentry aka Sentry is the alter ego of a teenager named Robert Reynolds aka Bob, battling schizophrenia and anxiety. He steals a mysterious serum from his high school science teacher in the hopes of getting high. However, it turns out to be a failed experiment by the government to recreate the Super Soldier Serum. He gains superpowers like strength, invincibility, flight, speed, enhanced senses, and energy projection.

However, his mental health condition also gives birth to an evil alter ego called The Void. Sentry is the benevolent version of The Void, created by Bob to prevent The Void, who has a cape and an S on his big belt buckle, as seen in the trailer. Lewis Pullman, the actor best known for Top Gun: Maverick and Lessons in Chemistry, will be seen as Bob aka The Void. All he spoke about his role in Thunderbolts* at San Diego Comic-Con last year was, “Everyone has their own nicknames and Bob is not his only name, as Lewis is not my only name.”
