Victims Identified

Among those killed in the April 10 crash was 36-year-old pilot Seankese Johnson and Agustin Escobar, a Siemens executive, along with his wife Merce Camprubi Montal and their three children, aged 4, 8, and 10. The family was visiting New York City to celebrate their daughter’s ninth birthday.

Crash Details

The Bell 206 helicopter, operated by New York Helicopter Charter Inc. and owned by Louisiana-based Meridian Helicopters LLC, went down at around 3:15 p.m. after taking off from a Manhattan heliport. The aircraft was on a sightseeing tour when it suddenly crashed into the Hudson.

Ongoing Investigation

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation. Chair Jennifer Homendy confirmed that NYPD divers are still searching for parts of the helicopter, including the rotor, tail, and roof sections.

Investigators are also examining reports of a large flock of birds in the area at the time of the crash. Homendy emphasized that no cause has been confirmed and urged patience as the investigation continues.

Experienced Pilot, Navy Veteran

Pilot Seankese Johnson held a commercial pilot certificate and had logged over 780 flight hours. His recent Facebook posts show him flying around New York and his hometown of Chicago. He was also a Navy veteran who had recently relocated to New York City.

Eyewitness Footage

Video captured by bystanders shows the helicopter spiraling before hitting the water. One clip appears to show a rotor detaching mid-air during the descent.

Spain Mourns Loss

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called the crash an “unimaginable tragedy,” expressing condolences to the victims’ loved ones. “Five Spaniards from the same family, three of them children, and the pilot have lost their lives,” he said.
