Netflix’s long-gestating adaptation of the beloved 1980s arcade game Dragon’s Lair is gaining momentum. Director James Bobin, best known for The Muppets and Dora and the Lost City of Gold, is reportedly in talks to helm the film adaptation, with Ryan Reynolds still attached to star and produce.
🎮 A Classic Reimagined

Dragon’s Lair, created by legendary animator Don Bluth, was one of the first video games to combine traditional animation with interactive gameplay. The story follows Dirk the Daring, a clumsy but brave knight on a quest to rescue Princess Daphne from the evil dragon Singe inside a dark wizard’s castle.
The project has been in development at Netflix since 2020, with Reynolds attached early on. This update marks a major step forward, as Bobin’s flair for blending comedy, fantasy, and action makes him a strong fit for the tone of Dragon’s Lair.
🎬 Ryan Reynolds and Netflix’s Ongoing Collaboration
Reynolds’ involvement in the project continues his successful relationship with Netflix, following films like 6 Underground, Red Notice, and The Adam Project. He is also expected to produce Dragon’s Lair through his Maximum Effort banner.
Netflix has yet to officially greenlight the film, but the addition of a director may signal that pre-production is nearing.
🕹️ Video Game Adaptations in the Spotlight
With recent video game adaptations like The Last of Us, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and Fallout performing well across film and television, Netflix seems eager to bring its own legacy property to life. Dragon’s Lair stands apart thanks to its unique animation history and cult following.
No casting beyond Reynolds has been confirmed, and a release date is still under wraps.
