In Celine Song’s highly anticipated film Materialists, Dakota Johnson stars as Lucy, a sharp and savvy matchmaker entangled in a complicated love triangle. As she finds herself torn between her charismatic ex (played by Chris Evans) and an intriguing new suitor (Pedro Pascal), Lucy’s journey unfolds against a vibrant backdrop of modern romance, ambition, and emotional risk.

Why Dakota Chose Materialists
While promoting the film on the global stage, Dakota Johnson shared what attracted her to the project. She spoke about the emotional layers and contradictions that made Lucy such a compelling character to portray — a woman navigating love, ambition, and vulnerability in a way that felt both modern and deeply human.

“After I read the script, I was immediately drawn to the layered inscrutability of Lucy,” Dakota Johnson revealed. “The role is incredibly complex — Lucy shows different sides of herself depending on who she’s with. She’s almost like a chameleon, shifting with every relationship. It kept me wondering which version of her was the real one, and that was so much fun to explore as an actor.”

Materialists will hit cinemas across India on June 13, with Sony Pictures Entertainment leading the release.

In a recent interview, Johnson also opened up about her early years in Hollywood. She shared how her father, Don Johnson, gave her a clear ultimatum after high school: attend college and receive financial support, or pursue acting and be independent.

“I didn’t get in, and my dad cut me off because I didn’t go to college,” she said. “So, I started auditioning. I think I was 19 when I did The Social Network, and then I took on small roles after that,” Johnson told E! News.
